The Traveling Lunch Ladies programs that brought fresh, locally-grown vegetables to students at Middleburgh Elementary School last fall has won the statewide NY School Nutrition Association - NY Farms Partnership Award for 2010.
The award, sponsored by the Schoharie Valley Farm to School Project and the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets, was presented during a ceremony in Colonie on Jan. 31 by Ag and Markets Commissioner Darrel Aubertine.
The program is a collaboration of the food service directors at Middleburgh, Cobleskill-Richmondville, Berne-Knox-Westerlo, Gilboa-Conesbille, Schoharie, Sharon Springs and Schalmont school districts. The six food service directors traveled to each other's schools, dressed as chefs and served fresh vegetables to children during lunch.Children were then surveyed about their preferences and the program.
